Call for female soccer players

The One Nation Cup was first played in 2006 in Bremen, Germany, and has been played every two years since then

ETHEKWINI Municipality has been invited by its sister city, Bremen, Germany, to participate in the 2016 One Nations Cup Football Festival.

The festival, scheduled to commence from 30 May until 4 June, will not only serve to strengthen the city’s relations with Bremen but is a rare opportunity for young females from the Durban to showcase their football talent on the international stage.

eThekwini Municipality will therefore be conducting selection trials for U/15 (born in 2001 or later) female soccer players to be part of Team eThekwini to represent the city in Bremen.

Players attending selection trials should take their birth certificates with photos. They should also provide their own sports attire for the trials. Registration will be from 8am to 10am and thereafter the selection trials will begin.

The One Nation Cup was first played in 2006 in Bremen, Germany, and has been played every two years since then. The aim is to develop intercultural peace, building connections between young people all over the world, irrespective of their cultural, religious and language backgrounds.

Since the inception of the tournament, this year will be the first that Team eThekwini will be represented by girls. This is indeed ground-breaking, as it bears testimony that the city is serious about gender equity in all aspects of life, including sports.

“As the custodians of sports development in the city, the municipality endeavours to reach as many young people as possible, and this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Participating in this tournament not only gives the young athletes international exposure, but also provides an opportunity for development of future soccer stars,” said eThekwini Municipality’s head of communications, Tozi Mthethwa.
