Man dies in University Road crash

Paramedics provided advanced life support to the man, but he was later declared dead on scene.

A MAN in his 20s was killed and another injured this morning, 25 January, after a light motor vehicle smashed into a tree in Westville.

ER24 paramedics responded to the call-out and found a light motor vehicle lying on its side on University Road, below the M13. The vehicle was heavily damaged on the driver’s side when it collided with a tree.

According to Russel Meiring, spokeman for ER24, the man was trapped inside the vehicle and was in a critical condition. “A second man was found standing near the vehicle being tended to by bystanders,” said Meiring.

Paramedics quickly extricated the man from the vehicle and provided him with advanced life support interventions. His multiple injuries proved fatal and he was later declared dead on scene.

“The remaining man was treated for his injuries and transported to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment,” said Meiring.

The cause of the accident is not yet known but the SAPS was on the scene and will be investigating.
