Local pupils excel at global maths challenge

Local youngsters shine in global maths competition competing against 225 children from eight other countries.

A+STUDENTS by CMATHS have made maths cool by bringing home awards for South Africa at The PAMA Global Awards on 29 December 2015. Nationally, the awards included 2 Champions, 2 Gold, 10 Silver and 14 Bronze Awards.

The PAMA Global Awards is an international competition where young maths talents compete against one another in intense mental challenges. The purpose of the competition is to acknowledge the different forms of mental arithmetic skills from all countries, promote abacus and mental arithmetic education, and develop friendships among contestants from around the world.

A+Students by CMATHS, a whole-brain development course targeted at children as young as three-years-old, sent 28 young whizzes to represent South Africa at the 15th PAMA Global Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Competition on 29 December 2015 in San Francisco, US.

Local pupils who excelled at the competition were Michaela Kapnias (12) of Hillcrest who achieved a silver, her younger brother, Vasillios Kapnias, (9), received a bronze award, as did Owen Coachman (9) of Waterfall. The siblings attend Thomas More College while Owen is a pupil at Kloof Junior Primary School.

The countries that participated in the PAMA Awards included Canada, Hong Kong, Korea, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Turkey, the United States and South Africa. A total of 225 pupils competed in the competition.
