More than 800 arrested during festive season

The crimes include possession of drugs, unlicensed firearms and ammunition, murders, house robberies, rape, dealing in liquor, possession of stolen property, arson, etc.

IN just a week, a jaw-dropping number of more than 800 suspects were arrested in KwaZulu-Natal over the busy festive season.

According to a statement released by the SAPS’ provincial Corporate Communications Media Centre, the police continue to work hard in tracing and arresting criminals involved in any crimes in this province.

“Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, sincerely appreciates the good work of all members involved in Operation Fiela for making this province a safer place. These members in blue achieved huge successes over the past week, from Monday, 28 December 2015 to Sunday, 3 January 2016, during which a total of 882 suspects were arrested for various crimes,” the statement read.

These crimes include possession of drugs, unlicensed firearms and ammunition, murders, house robberies, rape, dealing in liquor, possession of stolen property, arson, malicious damage to property, stock theft, common assault and petty cases.

“A large quantity of drugs and liquor were also seized by police during these operations. They also recovered illegal firearms which will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if they were used in any other crimes in the province. Such operations will continue across the province.”

Lt-Gen Ngobeni encouraged the community to continue with their support in the fight against crime by providing valuable information about any criminal activities in their areas.
