Deaf school stays on top of its game

School principal believes that the key is effective leadership and committed teachers who believe in their pupils.

KWATHINTWA School for the deaf in Inchanga achieved 100 per cent pass rate for the fifth year consecutively, with pupils receiving good results in 2015.

Every single pupil got distinctions with one of them, Sthembiso Thabethe from Bhobhonono in Cato Ridge scooping three As.

Principal of the school, Dr Mavis Naidoo, said the 2015 results were phenomenal. “It is not an easy task for deaf pupils to achieve such commendable results. I firmly believe that this proves that all pupils have the potential to succeed if they have access to quality education in a ‘learning enriched school’.

She added that the key is effective leadership; committed teachers who believe in their pupils.

“And most of all it is a school that has a shared commitment to high expectations for its pupils. To this end the school community needs to be thanked,”.

Sthembiso’s uncle, Nkosingiphile Thabethe said they are over the moon as a family.

“This has not been an easy journey for the child especially because he lost both his parents at a very young age. “In addition he had a history of lengthy hospitalisation impacting on his academic progress. But his resilient and focus was undeterred.”

Nkosingiphile said they will continue to support his goal to become a teacher.
