Duo get their hands dirty in clean-up

Two Highway locals teamed up to remove the out-of-control weeds growing unchecked along Glenugie Road in Manors.

FED up with the lack of service delivery, two Highway residents joined forces to start removing the myriad of weeds growing alongside and in the gutters along Glenugie Road.

Steven Duckworth and Chris Qayiso first embarked on this clean-up campaign on Sunday 27 December last year. To date they have cleared 10 large bags of weeds along a 200 metre stretch along the busy road. “We are not trying to replace the work the municipality should be doing, but are trying to highlight the whole problem of non-delivery of services which we as ratepayers should be receiving,” said Duckworth.

He noted the weeds had grown out of control and the infrastructure was being damaged due to the lack of maintenance as the large weeds had started cracking the concrete runoffs, drainage was being affected. This, in turn, caused water to pool up along Glenugie Road and made driving in wet conditions hazardous.

It is therefore out of desperation that some of us are taking the task into our own hands in an effort to prevent further damage to the roads, and to restore some semblance of pride in the way our neighbourhood looks, – said Duckworth.

Chris lives in Clermont and was unemployed when offered to help with the cleanup and due to his efforts, was offered a gardening job by a resident in the area. “Other residents have also taken up the initiative and cleaned their own verges and road gutters. We hope this continues as a little effort by many can make a huge difference,” said Duckworth. ”

Residents are urged to contact Ward 18 Councillor, Bruce Sutcliffe, at bruce@ward18.co.za and to attend the local CPF meeting on Thursday 14 January at the Pinetown Civic Centre at 6pm.
