BIKERS and their families from different motorcycle clubs in the Durban area descended on the sports field near Ethelbert Children’s Home in Malvern on Saturday 9 January to hand over goodies for the children.
According to Alwyn Bunce, president of the Wild Stallions, one of his club members, Michelle Marques, heard that Ethelbert children were in need of stationery and food. She contacted Jill Clack, who is a volunteer at the Home, and they came up with the idea of a bike run for stationery.
“We donated stationery to the value of R35000 which we collected and received sponsorship from Waltons, SA Greetings and ToyRus. We also received a cutlery donation from Glazier in Ballito. Caribbean Estates also donated R10 000 for the children’s counselling,” said Bunce.
He said monies from two raffles and cakes and refreshment sales will go towards purchasing yoghurt, fruit and cereals for the children,
It was a great day enjoyed by all. Children and caregivers from the Home were treated to bike rides around the ground, the first time on a motorcycle for many.
Vanessa Theophilus, the director of Ethelbert Children’s Home, thanked the bikers and friends for their support.
She said running costs for the Home which cares for 65 children is R5 million a year, however the Home only receives 35 per cent funding from the Government and relies heavily on assistance from the community and sponsors.
“We are so grateful for this kind donation. I am sure our children, like every other child in the world, will now be excited about their first day at school with their new stationery packs,” said Theophilus.
