Pupils’ small change helps feed baby rhinos

It costs R10 000 a month to feed a baby rhino.

THIS year, pupils from Saturn Pre-Primary School raised R20 000 by collecting their small change (‘brown money’) to feed baby rhinos.

The school project, which is in its third year, has grown as the school collected R7 500 on their first year and last year double the money to R15 000.

Throughout the year, the school encouraged children to take change to the school and in return get a sticker.

Angela Lang, who initiated this project and is also a teacher at the school, said she started this initiative as she is passionate about wildlife and the rhino poaching really worries her.

It costs R10 000 a month to feed a baby rhino. Each year, Lang uses a different educational toy and each child gets to take it home with them for a while.

“This year, I bought a lion which we named ‘Ziggy’,” she said. An auction was also held, where Ziggy was sold for R4 600 to one of the dads.

Lang said the project is aimed at educating children about rhino and the environment: “We need to do everything to save the rhinos.”

The money was donated to renowned author and conservationist, Lawrence Anthony’s Thula Thula Rhino Orphanage.
