Two arrested for possession of illegal scanners

The two suspects were charged with contravention of the Electronic Communication Act.

MEMBERS of the Durban Flying Squad were involved in an operation to eradicate the use of illegal scanners used to listen into police radio frequencies in Hillcrest on Friday, 11 December.

It is alleged that a car crash occurred in the Hillcrest area, and within 30 seconds of the crash being transmitted over SAPS radio frequency, a tow truck stood off at the scene.

The driver and the passenger were informed not to use any form of communication to contact other vehicles.

The vehicle was searched by police and they recovered two illegal scanning devices. The devices were found in the passengers handbag and in the vehicle.

Two suspects, aged 30 and 54, were arrested and were charged with contravention of the Electronic Communication Act. The accused appeared in the Pinetown Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 14 December.

The police officers will be everywhere in the province to pounce on those who are involved in criminal activities. “I applaud the members of the Durban Flying Squad for successfully appending the culprits,” said Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
