Local band fights xenophobia through music

The band sings in 13 different languages including Portuguese, Swahili, Spanish, Shona, English and IsiZulu.

A MUSIC group, which was formed to fight xenophobia – Zisamo – will be performing at the Rainbow Restaurant in Pinetown on Wednesday, 16 December.

‘Zisamo’ stands for Zimbabwe, South Africa and Mozambique, as the members are from these three countries.

The band, which sings in 13 different languages including Portuguese, Swahili, Spanish, Shona, English and IsiZulu, was formed to unite people from all nations to fight xenophobia.

One of the group members, Thabane Luthuli, said their aim was to bring people together. “Music is one language that people can connect through while having a nice time,” said Luthuli.

In 2013, the band won the Batttle of the Bands competition at Ushaka Marine World. They performed at the theme park every Sunday in 2014.

Luthuli said he met Mchunu in Clermont, who then introduced him to Dube, who then introduced them to Shange and Masinga.

He described their music as ‘world music’. “We do not really have a specific genre as we learn from each other and other musicians to cater for everyone. Our music makes tourists feel at home away from home.”

He added that their dream was to record an album singing in all 13 official languages.

The concert is free but donations are welcome. Anyone who wishes to help Zisamo record an album can contact Luthuli on 072 566 6672.
