HOUSEBREAKERS have targeted several Westville homes and businesses, according to Blue Security’s latest crime report.
Blue Security operations manager, Brian Jackson, said in the latest incident burglars had broken into a property in Duncan Drive at 6.53am on 3 December.
“Burglars managed to get into the property through a fence which had been cut during a previous housebreaking incident. They then forced open a bathroom window and fled with three pairs of shoes and a panic button that was lying on a table,” said Jackson.
Burglars also broke into two business premises and stole several computers on Monday, 30 November and Tuesday, 1 December in the evenings. They forced open the front door of a business in Sookhai Place and fled with seven computers, and burglars also forced open the front doors of an office in Spine Road and fled with four computers and a computer server.
Westville SAPS attended the three crime scenes.
In other incidents, burglars had attempted to break into residential properties in broad daylight. A burglar who was inside a resident’s garage in Beverly Drive at around 3pm on Tuesday afternoon fled the scene when the home owner spotted him.
And in another case, a burglar was disturbed after he forced open a window of a home in Aberfoyle Road. He didn’t manage to gain entry but instead grabbed a washing basket and fled the scene. The basket was later recovered near the fence.
Thieves also stole copper pipes from a house in Strathay Road.
Jackson advised residents and business owners to be vigilant in the build-up to the festive season when crime tends to spike and to ensure their home and business alarm systems were working optimally.
“Criminals don’t take a break but will take advantage of people who feel in a holiday mood and who might relax and let down their guard when it comes to home and personal security.”
