Police’s swift response leads to arrest

POLICE are looking for a man who managed to flee a crime scene in Bellair on Tuesday, 1 December. He and three other suspects drove their white bakkie into a premises on Railway Road at around midday, breaking a gate and forcing entry. Residents who saw the suspicious-looking vehicle on the property called the police as they knew that the owner of the house was not at home at that time.

The police immediately responded to a housebreaking in progress and then saw four men. Noticing the police, the men attempted to flee while shooting at the police. In retaliation, the police shot one suspect in the leg. He was arrested, together with other two men.

The bakkie was recovered and it was discovered that the men had already loaded stolen goods from the house, including a fridge, microwave, TV and electric appliances. The arrested suspects, aged between 26 and 35, will be charged with house-breaking and attempted murder. They will soon appear in the Durban Magistrates’ Court.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni, applauded the police for the swift response which led to the arrest of the suspects and recovery of the stolen goods. “I also highly praise the community members who took initiative and called the police. Once again, we are warning the criminals that the police will not hesitate to defend themselves when they are shot at,” she said.
