Senior Christmas event cancelled

Food parcels will only be distributed to senior citizens over 60 years old with a ticket.

UNFORTUNATELY the annual senior citizens’ Christmas function in Ward 10, sponsored by the ratepayers and municipality, has had to be cancelled.

The function would normally consist of a lunch, music and the handing out of food parcels to the senior citizens.

Councillor Rick Crouch said, “We usually held this function at the Gillitts Primary School but unfortunately this year they have decided to not allow it on their school field.”

The only other location was not within walking distance and according to Crouch, the speaker, Logie Naidoo, has refused to supply transport.

In consultation with the ward committee, community representatives, the local ANC branch and as no one would have been able to get there, it was decided to cancel the function so as not to incur wasteful expenditure of the ratepayers’ money.

“We decided to cancel the function only and have the food hampers delivered to Stockville for easier access to the elderly,” said Crouch.

The food hampers will be distributed from the parking lot of the shop at the intersection of Stockville Road and Azalia Road on Monday, 7 December. There is no time to announce for this distribution because the municipal officials have not confirmed yet.

The tickets should be available by this weekend and will be distributed by designated members of the community.

“If you do not have a ticket you will not receive a food hamper, as there are only enough for the number of tickets issued.”

“There are 600 tickets, 400 for me as the ward councillor to distribute and 200 for the ANC PR councillor. My tickets will be distributed by Billy Archury from my ward committee and Njabulo Mbhele, a resident of Stockville,” Crouch said.
