Westville church donates to a worthy cause

THE Catholic Womens League (CWL) donated R18 320 to Project Dignity, a non-profit organisation whose motto is ‘Charity, work and loyalty’.

Each year, the organisation fundraises and donates these funds to various organisations or projects that uplift the poor, needy and marginalised.

Project Dignity was nominated by a long-standing member of the Westville branch, Pat Strong. Up to 60 per cent of school girls in our country (seven million) stay away from school as they simply can not afford to buy sanitary pads. Sue Barnes, the founder of Project Dignity – Subz Pads and Pants, was founded by Sue Barnes.

Barnes started her efforts in 2000 to make and distribute these fully-washable, reusable sanitary pads, which come with pantie sets designed specifically for the poorer girls.

A pack consists of three sets of underwear and nine pads, which cost R205. CWL made its first donation at the end of 2014 to Project Dignity of R1 300.

Karen Scott, president of CWL, said they continued to support Project Dignity in 2015.

“It was decided to make this not only a CWL Westville branch project but requested permission from our parish priest, Fr Des Nair, to open this up to the Parish of Our Lady of Lourdes and ask our parishioners to donate to this worthy cause.

“We were overwhelmed by the generosity of our CWL women together with the parishioners, and a sum of R18 320 was collected. We continue to get donations from our parishioners and will continue to support this very worthy cause,” she said.

Sue added that they were very proud to hand this cheque over to Sue for Project Dignity.
