Man sentenced for raping neighbour (10)

"The accused gave the victim R2 and advised her to not tell anyone."

THE Durban Regional Court convicted and sentenced a 38-year-old man to 17 years’ imprisonment for rape on Monday, 16 November.

In March 2014, a 10-year-old girl went to her neighbour to visit her friend in Chesterville. When the girl arrived at her friend’s house, the father of the friend instructed her to go inside the house where proceeded to rape the girl. The accused gave the victim R2 and told her to not tell anyone.

A case of rape was opened at the Cato Manor police station for further investigation. The docket was then transferred to the Brighton Beach Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, which conducted the investigation that led to the arrest of the suspect. He made several court appearances until he was sentenced.

“These are the most vulnerable groups within our communities and mostly targeted by criminals who take advantage of their defencelessness. We will make sure that all those who are abusing them are sent to jail for a long time,” said Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
