Fire destroys KwaNyuswa orphanage

The home does not only operate as an orphanage but also has a group of women who run a community projects.

A KWANYUSWA orphanage was left destitute after a fire broke out in one of the buildings on Sunday night, 15 November.

Thokomala Orphanage currently looks after 12 children – three girls and nine boys, ranging from three to 18 years old. The children who reside at the home come from different backgrounds under various circumstances and have no parents.

The home, which has been in existence for a number of years, is currently being managed by Mlungisi and Lindiwe Ntuli. Lindiwe said the fire really left a huge space as the building that burnt down was used as an office. There was also a storeroom for food and community projects.

Thokomala does not only operate as an orphanage but also has a group of women who run a community project called Thelokuhle Community Projects.

Joyce Ngobese of Thelokuhle started running the group early this year and women get together to make a living. “We learn to sew and plant vegetables,” she explained. Ngobese said most of their sewing material is donated by the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust.

“We have received orders from people and créches but all our machines and material was burnt.” Ngobese pleaded with anyone who can assist them.

The orphanage lost two fridges, 10 sewing machines, four overlockers, material, a photocopying machine, computer, sewing tables and chairs, food, clothes and blankets.

Anyone who would like to assist the orphanage can contact Joyce Ngobese on 076 5473 705 or Lindiwe Ntuli on 060 430 9232.
