Mother warns of danger of fireworks

"I never thought this would happen to me and that I would be sitting by my son's hospital bed as a result of fireworks."

A MOTHER is warning other parents to be extremely careful of fireworks around children after her children were burnt by an exploding firework.

On Saturday, 21 November, Jessica Green’s two children and a neighbour’s child discovered fireworks that had been abandoned outside an unfenced warehouse in Sterkspruit Road, Cliffdale after the warehouse had been cleared out.

The children took the fireworks, which they referred to as ‘bomb’ fireworks. The neighbour’s child (11) lit the firework, which exploded. The children were all burnt in the explosion.

The neighbour phoned Jessica before hiring a car to rush the children to a Hammarsdale hospital. The older children were discharged after being treated for burns to the hands (11 years old) and the 12-year-old for a burn to his left leg and face.

The six-year-old was transferred to RK Khan Hospital for further treatment due to the severity of his burns to his face, arms and legs and smoke inhalation. His devastated mother said he was in a lot of pain and would probably be in hospital for the next two weeks.

“I am sitting by his bedside, trying to keep him calm and make him sleep as much as possible due to the pain. I am so upset as I have dogs, so we never have fireworks, and I have always been so careful about fireworks,” said Green.

“I want to warn other parents about the dangers of fireworks, especially with New Year approaching, as I never thought this would happen to me and that I would be sitting by my son’s hospital bed as a result of fireworks.”

The twelve-year-old was badly burnt on the face as well as his leg.
