Kearsney College beats St Charles at basketball

Kearsney's first basketball team beat St Charles College's first side 59 - 50.

KEARSNEY’s first basketball team beat St Charles College’s first side with 59 – 50 at Kearsney College on the weekend.

Both schools played their stayers teams and have beaten and lost to each other, so it was always going to be a close affair with the teams evenly matched.

The first quarter saw St Charles taking a slim lead while Kearsney started slowly on offence and allowed St Charles to score some easy baskets because of poor defence. The second quarter was much of the same with St Charles managing to build on their lead and Kearsney having no answer on the defensive end.

Trailing by six points at half-time, Kearsney turned the game on its head in the third quarter and took the lead, executing well on offence and forcing St Charles to take poor shots on defence. Even though St Charles pressed hard in the fourth quarter, Kearsney was able to maintain the lead and did not allow St Charles to get back into the game.

Captain, Mvelo Buthelezi, and SA U16 player, Thomas Westermeyer, were Kearsney’s leading scorers with almost everyone else on the team contributing.

It was not just Kearsney’s first team that performed well, as all of the college’s A teams won their matches, the U15As winning by 30 points and cementing their place as one of KZN’s best age group teams.
