Careline expands its services

The Centre offers help and advice for teenagers and their families.

CARELINE has expanded with two new premises, the Careline Crisis Centre and The T-Centre.

The Halfway House is still at 36 Assagay Road and is a long-term facility which houses 55 residents on their road to recovery from substance abuse, but there was a need for places where people, especially teenagers, could turn to for help, leading to the opening of the other two facilities that were established in September and August.

The Careline Crisis Centre is sharing offices with SACAN at the Gillitts shopping centre, working together but operating independently. The more central location makes it an easy access point for call-outs and counselling sessions are done at the office in a quiet, relaxed environment.

Hasseena Chirkuit, the crisis centre co-ordinator, said, “It is a hard but rewarding job. We get to help people become survivors rather than victims and we have that ability to help them no matter what their circumstances or background.”

The T-Centre at 1 Commonage Road is a Teenagers’ Crisis Intervention Centre which focuses on teenagers and is a safe place where they and their parents can get out-patient help for substance abuse or advice from qualified counsellors. There are group sessions as well as family therapy. On Wednesday from 10am to 12pm there is a get-together for parents of teenagers to chat, learn and share. They also have talks on topics such as teenagers at tisk.

“A lot of people don’t know where to go for help or who to turn to. Teeangers are often misjudged and have issues, and with our modern, fast-paced lives, parents are often too busy or miss out on time to just talk to them. We offer a place for teenagers and their families to turn to for help and advice,” said Chirkuit.

For help with substance abuse or advice, contact the crisis office on 031 765 1314 or the T-Centre on 071 121 6999, or Joey du Plessis on 082 787 6452.
