Chesterville Cemetery reaches maximum capacity

Only those residents who have leases on the site will be allowed to reuse their family graves.

ETHEKWINI Municipality wishes to inform members of the public that Chesterville cemetery, Ezinkawini, has reached its maximum burial capacity.

No new gravesites are available at the cemetery and only those residents who have leases on the site will be allowed to reuse their family graves.

The cemetery currently accommodates 35 000 gravesites. However, since the establishment of the cemetery, more than 80 000 burials have taken place, including that of late author and journalist, Nat Nakasa, and soccer star, Senzo Meyiwa, with some gravesites having been reused.

Members of the community from Chesterville and surrounding areas are urged to use alternative cemeteries nearby, which include Stellawood, Mobeni Heights and Dudley Street.

The cemetery is to be turned into an open air museum; this is in honour of Nakasa and other struggle heroes.
