THE second annual Breakfast for Moms of Type 1 Diabetic Children was hosted at Highfield House in Hillary on Saturday, 24 October.

Aimed at gathering moms with children suffering from diabetes to share their experiences, the event, with an attendance of 65 people, allowed them to mingle and discuss issues they face with specialist nurses who supply glucometers and insulin pumps and supplies for diabetics.

Special guest speakers included Val Opperman, a Type 1 Diabetic, who has ran two back to back Comrades Marathons and is now training for the Great Wall of China Marathon in 2016, Dr Claudine Lee who is a doctor passionate about diabetes and its technological advancements, Jenny Russell, manager Diabetes SA in Durban and Queensburgh resident, 16-year-old Alison Jordaan,

Type 1 Diabetic for 10 years. Guests received prizes and goodie bags sponsored by various companies. Event organiser, Dawn Jordaan, said it was a day of celebrating the successes of moms and children who deal with diabetes on a daily basis but set out to achieve goals regardless.

“This event is where moms meet like-minded others who understand the difficulties that go along with raising children with Type 1 diabetes.

“The multiple daily injections, the carbohydrate calculations at every meal, the blood sugar testing day and night, the constant worries – and also the amazing achievements these children attain without letting Diabetes stand in their way,” she said.

Jordaan, also mom with a Type 1 Diabetic child, decided to host an event like this to help others who are in need of support. The event doubled as a fund raiser and made R7 083, all proceeds made on the day were donated to Diabetes SA.
