Two Hillcrest High girls start Grade 7 prom dress project

Do you have any unwanted dresses to donate?

TWO Hillcrest High School pupils, Lily Roberts and Emily Goode, have introduced a Grade 7 prom dress collection project in collaboration with the Hillcrest Primary School Care Network.

The aim of the project is to give every Grade 7 Hillcrest Primary girl the opportunity to wear a beautiful dress to her farewell, which takes place at the end of the school year. The goal to to collect as many Grade 7 prom and party dresses as they can.

“Four years ago I attended my prom, and one of the most stressful experiences were the weeks leading up to it. ‘What will I wear?’ was the biggest question I asked myself, and although I was only 13, the pressure to find the perfect dress was great. I had friends whose dresses cost in the thousands and my family’s finances did not stretch that far. There are girls in Hillcrest Primary far worse off than I am, and with a term and a half to go we’ve decided to change things,” said Roberts.

They want to collect dresses that no longer fit, or have been worn once and are just hanging in cupboards, collecting dust. Once they have built a collection of dresses, these will be lent to Hillcrest Primary School Grade 7 girls. If the response is great enough they will expand to include other schools in the upper Highway area.

“We see this as a project to benefit the entire community; it is the community who will own the dresses and the community that will wear them. We also see a possible need arising for Grade 12 dance dresses and we really hope that the project will grow to include this.”

To donate dresses, contact Shirene Dovey on shirene@justdone.co.za or 084 529 9639 from Hillcrest Primary Care Network or Joanna Roberts on 084 280 3338. Dresses can also be dropped off at the Hillcrest High School office or at Hillcrest Primary Office, marked ‘Prom dress project’.
