Rapist sentenced to 10 years

The community helped with the arrest of a man (52) who fell asleep after raping a woman in Mbava Reserve near Umsunduzi.

ERIC Bantabahle Myeza was sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment for rape last Tuesday in the Camperdown Regional Court.

According to the Pinetown SAPS communications officer, the victim (52) was sleeping at her home on 2 January last year in the Mbava Reserve near Umsunduzi when an unknown man broke into her house.

“Myeza gained entry into the house through the window and then threatened the victim with a knife before raping her.

“After raping the victim the accused fell asleep and the victim managed to leave the scene and reported the matter to the neighbours.”

Myeza was arrested by the community and handed over to the police.

A case of rape was opened at Umsunduzi police station and a docket was transferred to the Pinetown Family Violence and Sexual Offences Unit.

“The accused was charged for rape and later appeared in court, where he was denied bail. The accused made several appearances in court and was finally convicted and sentenced for rape,” he added.
