Crestholme resident and his pitbull save another snare dog

Members of the public are urged to report suspected cruelty to animals.

A male canis africanus caught in a snare had a lucky escape thanks to the efforts of Alaine Crawford and his pitbull, Isis.

On 29 September, Cresthome resident, Alaine Crawford, heard a dog wimpering and suspected that the dog was caught in a snare in the bush close to his house. He started searching for the dog, but the crying stopped and he had to give up searching as it was dark.

Alaine had previously contacted the Kloof and Highway SPCA when he heard a dog crying and was instrumental in finding and rescuing that dog caught in a snare. His female Pitbull, Isis, had helped to find the dog in the dense bush.

On 30 September 2015, Alaine collected Isis from the Kloof and Highway SPCA clinic where she has just been sterilised. He explained to Inspector Syd Nkomo that he suspected another dog was caught in a snare in the same area.

Inspector Nkomo and Doctor Nthombeni followed Alaine and upon arrival, Isis ran into the bush and led them straight to the dog caught in the snare.

“Even though Isis was still recovering from surgery, she saved another dog’s life and once again is the hero of the day,” said Lisa Gadd. “”The Kloof & Highway Inspectorate would like to thank Isis and Alaine for contacting us in both cases and urges members of the public to report suspected cruelty to animals or animals in distress.”

She added, “The rescued dog is doing very well. He is such a lovable little chap and he has someone who is interested in adopting him we are in the process of doing their pre-home inspection.”

The Kloof SPCA can be contacted on 031 764 1212 or after-hours on 073 3359 322.
