Beware of Eskom con artists

People can report incidents of fraud, corruption and irregularities involving the Eskom brand to Eskom’s toll free crime line.

ESKOM has warned people not to fall victim to the ‘Eskom franchise’ scam. Eskom said in a statement issued on a Friday, 16 October that the criminals claim that Eskom is offering franchise opportunities for the distribution of prepaid electricity vending machines.

The con artists claim that the distributors would be able to resell electricity at a price that they would determine themselves.

Eskom said people should note that electricity prices in South Africa are determined by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) and no reseller is allowed to put any mark-ups on electricity.

Eskom urges people not to have any dealings with the SA Tendergate website, as this is a phishing scheme. Eskom also wishes to remind people that all business opportunities available from Eskom would be advertised on its own website – www.eskom.co.za.

People can report incidents of fraud, corruption and irregularities involving the Eskom brand to Eskom’s toll free crime line on 0800 112 722 or e-mail investigate@eskom.co.za.
