Committed Girl Guide achieves award

This award is the most prestigious which a Girl Guide can earn.

THE 1st Queensburgh Girl Guide Company hosted an award ceremony to honour Theresa Vermaak who completed her Chiefs Challenge, the highest award a Girl Guide can earn.

Theresa is only the second girl in the Queensburgh Company to achieve this award which was introduced in 1987.

Guides Guider and Queensburgh district commissioner, Natalie Raw, said they were very impressed and proud of Natalie who has been a Girl Guide for two years.

“Theresa is a very hardworking young lady, she is committed and she will now go into Rangers. To complete the badge, Theresa had to complete many difficult tasks and has earned many badges.

“She also had to complete 12 hours of community service which she did helping establish a food Garden at Inkanyezi Creche in Chesterville,” she said.

A Westville resident, Theresa has attended numerous camps and helped at many guiding events. Her favourite is the annual Scout Raft Race which takes place at Midmar dam in February each year.

Theresa, and her sister Maggie, travel from Westville every Friday to attend Guides as there are no Guides groups in the Westville area.

Her brothers attend the Cowies Hill Scouts. Theresa is the eldest of 8 children, all of whom are home schooled.

“Girl Guiding helps to actively develop the full potential of all girls and women incorporating a clearly defined value system. Girls are taught to cook, make crafts, how to change a tyre, and to wash cars.

“Through its commitment to life, leadership and outdoor skills, a progressively dynamic programme is offered in which members are given every opportunity to fulfil their particular responsibilities,” added Raw.
