Three is a charm for hijackers

Thieves fled an attempted hijacking by foot and then later stole a bakkie.

AN Isuzu bakkie was hijacked in New Germany this morning. According to Pro Force Security, minutes before that incident, two men had tried to hijack a woman in her car on Oppenheimer Road.

“The woman was approached by two suspects who tried breaking the car’s window to gain access to the car. They were not successful because the car had smash-and-grab protection film on the windows. In her attempt to escape, the woman reversed and the car behind her stopped,” said the security company’s David Walsh.

The men then went after the driver in the car behind and tried to hijack it instead. However, the owner of the car managed to wrestle the suspect, who then fled into New Germany on foot.

Walsh said one of the suspects was armed and had produced the gun during the hijacking; however, the gun was not used and no injuries were reported. Constable Phindille Radebe from Pinetown SAPS said a case of an attempted hijacking was opened today and it is under investigation. “The owner of the stolen car has not yet came forth but we believe they will soon. We will also investigate it,” Radebe said.
