SAPS’s quick response secures arrest of 4

Malvern SAPS's Crime Prevention Unit's swift thinking led to the arrest of four men.

FOUR men were arrested by the Malvern Crime Prevention Unit on Friday, 9 October after an officer recognised a car they were travelling in as being used in a previous crime.

During a patrol on the M7, W/O Raghoonundan and Cst Protas Sibiya noticed a suspicious car with four occupants, followed it and called for backup. “When the driver saw the police vehicle, he sped off and a high-speed chase ensued between the police and the men in the car on the long stretch of the M7,” said corporate communications officer for SAPS Malvern, W/O Radhika Marimuthu.

The team blocked the M7 exit and managed to stop the car. “The suspects raced to the exit, only to be stopped by the rest of the crime prevention members. They were forced to stop and their vehicle was searched,” she added.

Upon apprehension, it was discovered that the car contained gloves, a crowbar and screwdriver, which were apparently used for housebreaking. All four suspects are believed to be linked to numerous other serious crimes including hijacking and armed robbery. “The suspects were linked to a hijacking in Isipingo and house break-ins in the greater Durban area and were charged for being in possession of housebreaking implements,” said Marimuthu.

Station Commander, Lt-Col Valarine Reddy, commended the Crime Prevention Unit on the outstanding arrests and laudable teamwork.
