Poppy Day volunteers needed

Visitors are welcome to lay a wreath, bunch of flowers or even a single flower in remembrance of their loved ones.

THE date for the annual Poppy Day collection is fast approaching and the SA Legion is appealing for volunteers to give up an hour of their time to assist on Saturday, 7 November at pre-approved venues and shopping centres.

They are facing increased expenditure for assistance to needy ex-servicemen/women and their dependants. With the current high inflation and low employment rates, many military veterans are asking for assistance with accommodation, food and clothing. However, the SA Legion receives no state grants nor government assistance and relies on donations from the public.

Their major source of income is from occasional members’ bequests and the annual Poppy Day collection.

To volunteer, contact Johann Kruger at salegiondbn@telkomsa.net or on 031 2050578 until 1pm on week days.

There will also be a Remembrance Service at the Cenotaph, Gardiner Street, Durban from 10.30am to 11.30am on Sunday, 8 November, where homage will be paid to those who died in battle. Visitors are welcome to lay a wreath, bunch of flowers or even a single flower in remembrance of a loved one or loved ones who made the supreme sacrifice in a past conflict.

Tea and eats served at Mayor’s Parlour afterwards.
