Wyebank Warriors head for Malaysia

WESSA nominated Wyebank Secondary by submitting their projects with photos.

WYEBANK Secondary Water Warriors – Mthobisi Xulu, teacher, Selvaranie Naicker and Sharen Ramsunder – are bound for Malaysia on 19 October to attend the Global Water and Food Conference and Awards Presentation.

As an eco school with WESSA (Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa), the school was encouraged to participate in the Water Explorers Global project competition. The competition prescribed projects and challenges which each of the over 500 schools from eleven countries had to complete regarding water conservation awareness. Points were awarded for each project completed.

According to the school, Wyebank Secondary was the only school in South Africa to have successfully completed all the challenges. At national level they were one of the top five schools and won prize money of R9 200.

All the participating counties were requested by Global Action Plan, a UK-based environmental organisation, to submit nominations for their Water and Food competition. WESSA nominated Wyebank Secondary by submitting their projects with photos.

“We were totally unaware of this submission or competition. A few weeks ago we received an e-mail informing us that we had won. The Water Warriors learners, being a team of over 30, were the innovators and drivers of the various projects,” said Selvaranie Naicker, eco school coordinator.

In Malaysia they will be attending a four-day Global Water and Food conference and awards presentation. They have won an all-expenses-paid trip for the organising educator and two pupils.

South Africa will be the only country in Africa to have pupils present.

Other countries participating are UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Turkey, Ireland, Poland, Bermuda and Switzerland.
