UPDATE: 9 students arrested at Westville campus

'Peace has been restored in UKZN campuses except for Westville' - Lesiba Seshoka, UKZN executive director of the corporate relations division.

THERE were disruptions at a UKZN Westville residence on Wednesday, 7 October and nine students were arrested.

On Monday, 5 October an agreement was reached between student leadership and the university on all of the concerns raised by students in their memorandum to university management.

“Both parties agreed that all of the short-term matters raised will be addressed immediately and that there will be ongoing consultation on all long-term matters raised,” the university’s Lesiba Seshoka said.

Yet two days later, there were reports of disruptions and violence at a Westville residence.

Seshoka said, since the agreement, there had been no disruptions except for a small group in the Westville campus. The student leadership was supposed to engage with students and ensure that ‘the fight must stop’.

He said the disruptions can be attributed to the fact that the arrested SRC members will not be released, including the president, Lukhanyo Mtshengu, and secretary general, Ngcebo Mazibuko.

“Students must understand that if you commit a crime, there will be consequences,” Seshoka said.
