The vision is clear – eye health care is vital

Invest in a clearer future and take care of your eyes.

EVERYBODY deserves a clear vision, and World Sight Day (8 October) provides an opportunity for society to learn more about the importance of eye health care.

The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) this year urges society to focus on everybody who needs eye care services.

Optometrist, Dr Mike Garnham of Allan Marias and Partners Optometrist in Pinetown, said eye health care is important, especially for children.

“It is important to test children before they start school, because many kids have issues at school clearly because they cannot see the chalk board,” said Garnham.

According to Garnham, adults and children should do regular check-ups every two years.

“If there is a history of short-sightedness, in the family it is vital to go for frequent check-ups,” he said.

Garnham highlight glaucoma as a major problem in society today, it is the increase of pressure in the eye and it has no visual symptoms, it can only be detected by an optometrist, and late detection could cost an individual the loss of an eye.

Another important factor to eye health care is protection against UV rays: “Wearing sunglasses is very important, many people do a lot of outdoor activity without protected their eyes,” he added.
