290 offenders convicted over sexually related crimes

According to Major Thulani Zwane, the KZN SAPS have a lot to celebrate for achieving outstanding results in convicting a large number of sexual offenders.

VARIOUS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Units in KwaZulu-Natal have a reason to celebrate results achieved during their investigation of various sexual related offences in the province.

“From Tuesday, 1 September to Wednesday, 30 September, the units collectively arrested 290 perpetrators accused for various cases including kidnapping, assault, domestic violence, sexual assault, rape, contravening protection orders, attempted rape, child abuse, child neglect, child abandonment and statutory rape cases. The accused have been convicted by various courts in the province after they were found guilty of these sexual related offences,” said Major Thulani Zwane.

Forty-seven convictions were secured and 14 life imprisonments were handed down to the convicted accused. He said that they gladly acknowledged that maximum prison sentences were also handed down in most cases and that justice was served to the victims. “We owe these successful convictions to the dedication and capability of the different FCS Units that effectively investigated crimes involving vulnerable women and children in our province,” Zwane added.

Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, applauded these successes with a sense of accomplishment and expressed her confidence in the judicial system, which has meted out befitting sentences to these rapists. “The sentences handed down will send a clear message to like-minded would-be offenders that the police will trace, arrest and make sure that they present thorough investigated dockets to courts for prosecution.

“KwaZulu-Natal police will endeavour with all its resources to prevent crimes against women and children and make the province a safer place for everyone,” she said.
