New Germany road open for motorists

Motorists can expect an even flow of traffic in New Germany as some lanes have been opened in Qashana Khuzwayo Road.

AFTER almost a year of heavy traffic in New Germany roads, motorists can expect an even flow of traffic as some lanes have been opened in Qashana Khuzwayo (Shepstone) Road.

The lanes were opened on Thursday and some motorists have already started using the road.

The road was closed along Qashana Khuzwayo (Shepstone) Road at the intersection of Escom Road, and Blase Road in Pinetown will commence on Monday, 26 January as part of the GO!Durban’s planned road deviation.

The north-bound and south-bound traffic on Qashana Khuzwayo was diverted along Blase Road, Chelsea Avenue and Escom Road.

The initial reports anticipated that the road would be closed for three months.

Businesses along Qashana Khuzwayo suffered a huge blow because of the road closure as this caused inconvenience for customers.

Carlos Esteves, the deputy head of Road System Management, confirmed that the road has now been opened and motorists can use the route.

“The eThekwini Transport Authority is endeavouring to re-establish the continuity of traffic flow along Qashana Khuzwayo Road, but still under restricted construction environment while the balance of the work is completed.

“Some traffic signal equipment was stolen and the re-instatement of the signals at the intersections will be delayed for a few days so motorists are requested to drive carefully and to treat any intersection where the signals are not working as a four-way stop,” said Esteves.

Manager of Captains’s Catch Fish n’ Chips, Roy Anunthkumar, said hopefully business will go back to normal. “Although there is still lots of work to be done, I believe that things will now slowly go back to normal. The last ten months have been very hard on the business, we lost 10 per cent profit every month. I really hope that the opening of the road will bring back the customers.”
