UPDATE: Police re-arrest escaped detainee

The police say they have strengthened standing orders to ensure that this incident never happens again.

INFORMATION gained from an informer led the police to recapturing a second detainee who escaped from the Bellair police station holding cells in July.

Bheki Nkosi, who was re-arrested by police on Thursday, 3 September, was originally detained for the unlawful possession of a firearm; however, upon further investigation, it was established that he was also linked to a murder in Chatsworth and now faces a new charge of escaping from custody.

Nkosi, together with Vusi Gumede and Siyabonga Dlamini, escaped from police custody in the early hours of Sunday, 26 July, when they allegedly cut off a steel bar from the inner cell gate, bent the outer cell gate, squeezed themselves out of it and then made a hole on the wall, managing to free themselves by pushing out a metal screen.

Bellair SAPS corporate communications officer, W/O Derek Vijiam, said that the police have strengthened standing orders to ensure that this incident never happens again.

“The police have specific standing orders that are prescribed to all officials as to how to restrain dangerous prisoners from escaping and ensuring that they are held in custody until trial or duly released,” he said.

Dlamini is still at large, however the police say that his re-arrest is imminent. You can help the police with his recapture by contacting 031 451 2826, your nearest police station or CrimeStop on 0860 010 111.
