Malvern SAPS busts pupils with drugs

Two pupils were arrested for drug possession.

A STING operation by the Malvern SAPS, undertaken on Bowker Road in the park area and the surrounding vicinity, led to the discovery of pupils in the possession of drugs on Wednesday, 19 August.

Under the guidance of Visible Policing (Vispol) head, Captain Mano Govender and his team, the operation led to the discovery of pupils in possession of drugs. “Two learners were arrested; one was released on a warning and the other was charged,” said W/O Radhika Marimuthu. The task was formed as part of the effort of ensuring that the area remains a drug-free zone, where the Malvern police, together with Queensburgh High School, work tirelessly in combating these illegal activities.

“SAPS Malvern holds frequent covert operations pertaining to the school and its surroundings. Captian Govender and his team also do stop-and-searches on taxis that usher pupils to and from the school and these operations are frequent,” she added. Marimuthu added that there is covert surveillance in place to assist them in this fight against crime. The deputy principal at the school said he was pleased with the partnership they have with the police in drug eradication.

“Whatever happens outside the school is under the SAPS’s jurisdiction. We work closely with the Malvern SAPS and we welcome all their efforts in making the school as well as the area drug-free,” said Marthinus Myburgh, Queensburgh High School’s deputy principal.

The police in Malvern joined Queensburgh High School on Friday, 21 August for an anti-drugs campaign that was held outside the school. The station commander, Lt-Col Valarine Reddy, W/O Radhika Marimuthu, W/O Vanessa Laas, Annalise van den Berg, Rhoda Gounder, Kanagie Govender and Katrina Mthembu the campaign and placard demonstration against drugs. The police team displayed placards saying no to drugs in support of the school’s initiative.
