Armed hijackers strike in Westville

Motorists have been urged to be vigilant when arriving home and leaving for work as most hijackings occur in driveways in the morning and evening.

A WESTVILLE motorist was held up at gunpoint outside her driveway in Duncan Drive on Thursday morning by a gang of four hijackers.

According to Blue Security’s operations manager, Brian Jackson, this is the third incident to be reported to the company since last Saturday.

Speaking about the latest incident, he said, “Just as she had pulled out of the driveway and the gate had closed, four men in a gold Mercedes ambushed her and held her up at gunpoint. Three of the men were armed with firearms. They also robbed the motorist and her sister of jewellery and a handbag and fled in her vehicle. There were no injuries reported. Westville SAPS attended the scene of the crime.

“This latest incident follows two hijackings last weekend when a gang of four hijackers targeted a resident in Matapan Drive just before 11pm last Saturday night, and just six minutes later hijackers struck another victim in Callender Road. The four armed hijackers held up a resident in Matapan Drive at gunpoint as he was parking his car in the garage.

“They robbed him of his wallet and cellphone and sped off in his vehicle, which was later recovered in Claremont,” Jackson said. Six minutes later, a gang of four hijackers held up a resident in Callender Road. It is unclear at this stage whether there is any connection between the gangs that committed these crimes,” he said.

Jackson advised motorists to be vigilant when arriving home and leaving for work as most hijackings occur in driveways in the morning and evening.

“Check for any vehicles lurking near the entrance before you turn in and keep your car parallel to the gate so that you can’t be blocked in and can drive off easily if you notice anything suspicious. If you feel uneasy about anyone near your property, rather drive on and call the police or your security company,” he added.
