No case opened against alleged Pinetown robbers

"If the victim of the robbery doesn't come forward by today, Tuesday, 25 August to open a case, the men will be released." - Cst Phindile Radebe, Pinetown SAPS communications officer

PINETOWN SAPS is looking for the woman who was allegedly robbed by three men in Old Main Road, Pinetown on Monday morning, 24 August.

The three men have been caught but no case has been opened. “If the victim of the robbery doesn’t come through by today, Tuesday, 25 August to open a case, the men will be released,”said Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Cst Phindile Radebe.

Well-known pastor, Vusi Dube, witnessed three men rob a woman in her car at a robot. It is reported that the woman was a tourist from Singapore.

“When I saw the three guys approaching the car I knew something was wrong, and when I saw them taking something out of the car I knew she was being robbed,” said Dube.

Dube at first tried to take a video of the incident but failed and took pictures of the robbers instead. He said he tried to chase after the men but they managed to flee.

“What saddened me the most was the fact that no one was willing to help me pursue the thieves,” he added. The Pinetown SAPS corporate communication would like to sensitise motorists in the Pinetown CBD to ensure that they keep their windows closed, especially when approaching intersections.

“Many cases of robberies have been reported where motorists are robbed by criminals because they take advantage of open windows,” said Radebe.

Radebe added that Pinetown is a busy place and is surrounded by a big industrial area where people from all the provinces come to deliver and collect goods for their businesses. The items that are most often taken are cellphones, jewelry and money. These criminals have ways of making you open a window when it is closed.

They point at the tyre of the vehicle to say that it is flat, and when you open the window to check you get robbed,” said Radebe. Criminals are also taking advantage of the road construction that is taking place in the Pinetown CBD.
