Are you going to fight or flee?

Vox pop: What would you do if you were confronted by an intruder in your home?

The fight-or-flight response, also known as the acute stress response, refers to a physiological reaction that occurs in the presence of something that is terrifying, either mentally or physically.

The response is triggered by the release of hormones that prepare your body to either stay and deal with a threat or to run away to safety.

The high crime rate is a reality in our country, and residents might find themselves in a tricky situation at any time. When the adrenaline pumps, some people might defend themselves and punch an intruder in the face, while others might play along to try ensure their safety.

Highway Mail went to Pinecrest Centre in Pinetown and asked locals what they would do if they were confronted by an intruder in their home:

“I wouldn’t fight back because I wouldn’t be sure if the intruder had weapons or not. I’d just listen to what he wants and try to do everything he says.” – Siphumelele Sithole (24)

“When your life is in danger, it’s always safer to cooperate with them.” – Leneshan Pillay (23)

“I’d give them whatever they want.” – Keshan Moonsamy (26)

“I would give them what they want, I wouldn’t risk my life. I’d be too scared to try and fight.” – Silungile Ngcobo (19)

“I’d definitely fight back! That person would be lights out. No one has a right over my life or any of my belongings.” – Debbie Maree (35)

“I would be nervous so I’d let them do what they want. I’d hesitate to fight back because that might anger the person and put my life in danger.” – Tyrone Quick (22)
