Atholl Heights remembers Mrs Warwick

Pupils, parents and educators flooded the school's playground remembering those with cancer.

ATHOLL Heights Primary School remembered those affected, battling with and those that died from cancer on Friday, 31 July.

Pupils, parents and educators gathered at the school’s field in the afternoon where they placed paper bags decorated with personal messages to their loved ones either suffering or had died from cancer.

Media Centre teacher, Linda Attwell, explained the importance of the event .”This event is was organised together with the cancer association of South Africa (CANSA) in remembrance of our former late school principal, Diana Lynn Warwick and my late husband,” she said.

Approximately 300 children consisting of all the Grade 6 and 7 pupils, 140 book munchers and an undisclosed number of parents and supporters attended the function.

Attwell said that she was very excited about the event because it is very meaningful to the many people attending as cancer has touched many lives.

“I started this CANSA relay at school in memory of my husband who died from liver cancer in 2012 and the many friends and family of our learners who have experienced the dreaded disease and this was our third annual event. Our late Principal, Mrs Warwick, was diagnosed with cancer in July last year but sadly passed away in November. Hence the large heart was in memory of her and the smaller heart for my husband, Rob,” explained Attwell.

There were over 3 000 bags on the field and the school collected over R34 000 in donations to CANSA.
