Traffic jam leads to arrest of car thieves

The suspects were caught off guard and didn't put up a fight as they couldn't go anywhere.

HEAVY traffic on the roads of Durban from the tanker accident on Tuesday morning turned two suspects into a laughing stock after they were apprehended by foot.

A Pro Force operation team on their way to Isipingo turned onto the N2 from the M7 south-bound and were soon stuck in the traffic from the terrible accident. They suddenly picked up a tracker signal from a Toyota Hilux that had been stolen in Pietermaritzburg in the early hours of the morning.

The signal from the tracking unit grew stronger as the team worked their way through the traffic. Eventually, the team had to stop and walk in between cars to get closer to the stolen vehicle, which was also stuck in the traffic.

The vehicle was located with the suspects in it. They were then apprehended and handed over to the Vehicle Theft Unit in Pietermaritzburg.

Pro Force’s David Walsh said the suspects surrendered to defeat. “Jeremy Berry and Pieter Laubscher were the ones on the road at the time. The suspects were caught off guard and didn’t put up a fight as they couldn’t go anywhere,” said Walsh.
