UPDATE: Clean-up underway on N2

One of the truck drivers was hailed a hero for his efforts to free the other driver.

ONE of the truck drivers from the tankers that were ablaze this morning has been hailed a hero for saving his fellow trucker.

According to reports on News 24, Philip Sivara boldly rushed to help the other truck driver (whose name remains unknown) and smashed his windscreen to free him from the pile-up.

Sivara said he was on his way to Richards Bay when he had to pull over as his truck had broken down. He then decided to sleep while waiting for help. He was woken up by a bang on his trailer and that is when the fire broke out.

The highway is still closed in both directions due to safety reasons. Traffic is still diverted via the M7 on the south-bound lane and via the M1 and M4 on the north-bound lanes of the N2. This has resulted in traffic congestion in large areas south of Durban this morning.

Motorists are urged not to enter an intersection unless they know they can get across before the robot changes, to avoid grid-locking. Paramedics treated the two men at the scene for minor injuries and after being examined. They decided they did not wish to be taken to hospital.
