Boats destroyed in blaze

Six boats were destroyed in a fire on Sunday morning.

THE exact cause of the fire that destroyed six boats and a storage container at a Pinetown-based boat yard on Sunday is unknown at this stage. Mike Higgs, who has owned Boat Boyz for the past eight years, said there were reports that a vagrant was seen running down the road and away from the premises shortly after the blaze broke out.

The Pinetown resident said there were around 20 boats on the premises, but fortunately only six were destroyed. “Members from SA CAN noticed the fire and notified the fire department. The Pinetown fire department is being renovated and therefore a fire truck from the Durban station had to be sent out. If a truck had been sent from Pinetown, very little damage would have been caused.”

SA CAN’s Andreas Mathios, who noticed the smoke while returning from a pet rescue call-out, said, “The incident occurred around 10:30am. I was on my way back from a pet rescue when I noticed the smoke and I immediately contacted the fire department. A vehicle was dispatched to the scene and the owner was notified.”
