SPCA launches educational puppet show

Although these educational efforts are targeted at schools in the Kloof and Highway rural and disadvantaged communities, the Pet-Pals material and puppet show will also available to children throughout the Highway area.

THE Kloof and Highway SPCA believes that education is fundamental in teaching people to respect and care for animals.

During the years 2015 and 2016, the SPCA will be launching the Pet-Pals Education Programme where the education team will teach school children about responsible pet care, animal welfare principles and the goals and mission of the Kloof and Highway SPCA.

Education officers will be visiting pre-schools and primary schools throughout the Kloof and Highway area as well as the surrounding rural areas to give talks and present the SPCA’s Pet-Pals Education Programme, which includes an interactive puppet show and classroom activity booklets.

An exciting puppet show, aimed at Grade 1 to 3, teaches them the five Pet-Pals care rules.

Although these educational efforts are targeted at schools in the Kloof and Highway rural and disadvantaged communities, the Pet-Pals material and puppet show will also available to children throughout the Highway area. Geoff Etheridge, who is a pensioner who designed the puppet theatre, said he is very grateful for the opportunity to do something for the SPCA.

“I enjoyed the challenge to design a demountable joint on the puppet theatre panels that did not need any loose parts which would get mislaid or lost, the rest was straightforward joinery.”

Etheridge retired (three times) after 53 years in construction and building. He studied in the UK.

“I am an active member of the Woodcrafters Association of Durban; we hold meetings demonstration twice a month an new members are always welcome,” he said.

Nicole Lewis from Second Treasure painted the puppet theatre so that it would appeal to children.
