HACT’s yarn-bombed tree honours heroes

For a R30 donation per square, people all around the globe were given the opportunity to nominate their hero.

THE Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust team hosted a fundraising ‘yarn-bombing’ to raise support for its Respite Unit through its Hero Tree Project tribute to South Africa’s hero, Nelson Mandela.

For a R30 donation per square, people all around the globe were given the opportunity to nominate their hero, someone that had impacted their lives and felt deserved special recognition.

The staff of Woza Moya, an income generation project of the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust, and a host of volunteers during the build-up to Mandela Day were hard at work stitching together the 1 000 Hero Squares which were then yarn-bombed onto the tree from Thursday, 16 July to Friday, 17 July.

Woza Moya manager, Paula Thomson, said this fundraiser was in celebration of Mandela and his legacy of being a hero to South Africa and the world.

“We hope that this makes the centre more accessible to everyone. I wish to send out a big thank you to Professional Access Rentals for donating the cherry picker, which made this all possible, to the community for nominating a hero and to the volunteers which came together to make it a success,” said Thomson.

People can still nominate their hero. Visit www.backabuddy.co.za/champion/project/mandela-day-hero-tree-2015 and name your hero. All of the funds raised from this project will not only create employment but raise funds for the Centre’s Respite Unit.
