Community embarks on river clean-up

Pinetown residents, Cowies Hill Lions Club members and members from the 1st Pinetown Scouts spent their 67 minutes for Mandela Day, doing a river clean-up in Pinetown on Saturday, 18 July.

RESIDENTS from Pinetown, members from Cowies Hill Lions Club and 1st Pinetown Scouts joined the river clean-up on Saturday in honour of Mandela Day.

According to Mark Liptrot, chairman of the uThekwane Conservancy, a team in Padfield Park worked on the Aller River off Hilmer Road. The group in Ashley split into three teams and worked along the Umbilo River and tributary running behind the Mariannhill Tea Room, which sadly is suffering from sewer pollution.

Small pieces of plastic, nylon ropes, string, clothing, broken television sets, rags, nappies, cooldrink bottles, polystyrene, cardboard and rubber tubing were some of the items that were picked up on the day.

Two areas of illegal dumping were found in Ashley and were reported to DSW on Monday.
