Spike in armed robberies

Residents have been urged to be cautious following an increase in armed robberies.

SIX armed robberies were reported in the Highway area over the past week. According to Blue Security operations manager, Brian Jackson, armed robbers targeted homes and businesses in Hillcrest, Kloof, Westville, New Germany, Westmead and Wyebank.
“The most recent incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning when a gang of armed robbers held up two security guards at a business premises in Wyebank. Four robbers armed with firearms held up the security guards, took away their panic buttons and tied them up on the premises. The gang used picks and hammers to break down a wall to access ATMs on the property and then used angle grinders to cut open the safe before fleeing in a white Bantam bakkie,” he said.  Pinetown SAPS attended the scene of the crime.
In a separate incident, two robbers armed with a firearm and a knife invaded a home in Maryville Road in Westville in the early hours of Friday morning. The two robbers gained entry through the kitchen after removing louvre windows and cutting open the burglar bars. They fled with cellphones, an iPad, jewellery and cash.
There was a second armed robbery reported in Moffat Avenue in Westville just before 5pm on Saturday. Three armed men held up the domestic worker while she was attending to washing on the line and forced her to open up the house. They ransacked the property and fled with two televisions in a black Mercedes. The items stolen during the robberies earlier in the week included cellphones, a computer, electronic tablets, cameras, jewellery and a firearm.
