ANC Women’s League chairwoman killed at her home

KZN MEC for Transport appalled by brutal murder of ANC Women's League chairwoman.

THE chairwoman of the ANC Women’s League in KwaNdengezi, Thokozani Phakathi (58), was shot and killed at her home on Friday, 10 July.

The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, condemned the callous murder of ‘Mama’ Phakathi and urged the law enforcement agencies do everything to ensure that those responsible for the murder are brought to justice as soon as possible.

“I am deeply shocked by this senseless murder of Mama Phakathi. This deed is nefarious, ghastly and inhumane. We condemn this murder in the strongest possible terms,” said Mchunu, imploring anyone with information on the murder to report it to the police immediately.

Major Thulani Zwane said Phakathi was at her place of residence when she heard a knock on the door. When she opened the door she was confronted by unknown suspects, who then shot her. She was taken to hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

The motive for the killing is unknown. A case of murder was opened at the KwaNdengezi SAPS for investigation and no arrests have been made.

“We shall monitor this case until there are arrests and convictions. I have, however, been assured that members of the police are working around the clock to ensure that those who are responsible for this deed are brought to justice as soon as possible,” said Mchunu.

Mchunu also extended his heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Phakathi.
