Sewage pollutes Palmiet River

The Palmiet River has turned brown and there is a terrible smell coming from the water.

THE Palmiet River has suffered more pollution from the Blair Road Pump station, which is overflowing directly into the water.

Founder of the Palmiet River Watch, Lee D’Eathe, said he does not know what caused the setback at the Blair Road sewage pump station.

“The electronics were upgraded recently to cycle the load among a fuller complement of new and bigger pumps. While there was a reduction in the number of sewer pollution incidences for a short while, something is going wrong again.

“The authorities need to apply proactive and preventative approaches, and need to put measures in place to ensure that the sewage and industrial trade effluent does not get to the river when the system breaks down,” he said.

D’Eathe added that the river had turned brown and there was a terrible smell coming from the water at Birdhurst Weir.
