UPPER Highway residents can now enjoy a state-of-the-art, six-cinema complex in the newly-completed Watercrest Mall.
On Thursday, 25 June, the Ster-Kinekor theatres opened the doors for the long-awaited Cinema Nouveau.
At the official grand opening event on Wednesday, 24 June, 300 guests were welcomed to the new Ster-Kinekor site, where they enjoyed an exclusive pre-screening of the explosive movie, San Andreas, starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, in earth-shattering 3D.
Bradley Knowles, general manager of marketing for Ster-Kinekor Theatres, who welcomed the guests, said the new site at Watercrest Mall and the the six cinemas all feature the latest in digital technology and projection.
“This produces crystal-clear images on the big screen and surround-sound around the cinema, combined with luxury seating to ensure our audiences enjoy ‘great moments at their greatest’ every time they visit one of our cinemas.
Included in the mix at Watercrest Mall, which offers over 900 seats across the six cinemas, are two 3D-ready screens to show the latest film releases produced in this larger-than-life format.
“In addition to the latest releases being screened using digital projection technology, this complex also boasts another innovation for Ster-Kinekor. The introduction of self-service catering terminals will enable patrons to select and pre-order their snacks and make payment before proceeding to the catering counter to collect their order,” said Knowles.

Movies that will be released in the next few weeks at the new Ster-Kinekor theatres at Watercrest Mall include Royal Night Out (17 July); Woman in Gold (31 July); Choir Boy; the new animated film from Disney Pixar, Inside Out (in both 2D and 3D); the hilarious Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy, Jude Law and Jason Statham; the current ‘talk of the town’, Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic World (2D and 3D), which has broken box office records around the world; the popular musical, Pitch Perfect 2; and the drama, 5 Flights Up, starring Diane Keaton and Morgan Freeman.
In addition to these titles, new releases from Friday, 26 June include the explosive San Andreas and the adult comedy duo of Mark Wahlberg as John Bennett and his lovable teddy bear, Ted (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) in Ted 2.
